Both training days include real outdoor fieldwork in the Geopark. Day 2 (Tuesday) takes you to the mud volcanoes; Day 3 (Wednesday) follows a field circuit through two of the Geopark's landmark sites.

DAY 02

Field Investigation — Pâclele Mici Mud Volcanoes

Pâclele Mici Mud Volcanoes

The Buzău Land Geopark holds one of the world's most accessible clusters of mud volcanoes — small cones and craters that erupt cold, gas-driven mud instead of lava, in miniature echoes of much larger volcanic eruptions elsewhere. At Pâclele Mici you'll see professional and educational monitoring equipment (meteorological, seismic and GNSS) installed directly on an active site, and discuss with the trainers how exposure, topography and local conditions shape the data these instruments record.

DAY 03

Field Learning Circuit

Wed 29 July · 15:00–18:00

An afternoon circuit near Ulmet with two stops, each chosen for a different geological or environmental story. At every stop you'll make short observations and simple measurements — the emphasis is on asking answerable questions and gathering evidence, not just admiring the scenery.

Stop 1

Trovanții — the Ulmet concretions

Also known as "Babele de la Ulmet" (the Old Ladies of Ulmet)

Trovanți are oddly-shaped sandstone concretions, nicknamed "Moși și Babe" (old men and women) in local folklore for their bulging, almost sculptural forms. Geologically, they formed from sand deposited long ago in a prehistoric river delta, cemented over time into rounded and irregular shapes around a mineral nucleus. They're a striking, hands-on example of how sedimentary rock can form well after the original sand was laid down.

Stop 2

Muzeul Formelor

The Museum of Shapes, Ulmet — Bozioru

An interactive museum built inside a former tourist information point, right next to the concretion site. Using augmented reality on tablets or phones, the Ulmet concretions "tell their own story" — the prehistoric river delta, the retreat of the sea, the rise of the Carpathians, and how groundwater slowly shaped the trovanți you just saw. There's even a chance to compare them with concretions found on Mars.
